With increasing miniaturization capabilities of electronic systems sensor networks gain increasing importance in science and engineering topics.

There are research activities in network communication and distributed data processing topics required in high-density and highly-miniaturized sensor networks.

Fundamental contributions come from digital logic circuit design merging sensors, data processing units, and communication.

Smart and robust message passing in sensor networks is a main issue in high-density networks with nodes of small size and less computing power, illustrated in figure 1  using delta-distance-vector routing. Smart routing can overcome traps in the network topology, illustrated in the example with node 5.

Artificial Intelligence algorithms (AI) contribute to the design of robust distributed data processing systems and energy management in such systems. Smart energy management enables the design of self-powered sensor nodes and is a prerequisite for high-density and highly-miniaturized sensorial materials [SPIE11A].
